Today was the pre-conference day for Localization World at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Speaking with the event organizer, Donna Parrish, I was told that there will be a record number of attendees this year. That’s great news! Perhaps companies are loosening their grip on budget so that people can travel to industry events now. And judging my the number of people milling around on breaks in combination with the number of name badges on the table, it looks like a record crowd for sure.

This year, the organizers of LocWorld implemented a really nice social networking function as part of their registration site. The platform is by Pathable and it adds social networking to events. Using the Pathable platform, I was able to find out who in my network is attending the event. That is, who of my LinkedIn and Twitter connections were attending. I was also able to create a personal schedule and, even better, I was able to see who else was planning on attending the same sessions as me.

About a week ago, I received an email from one of my LinkedIn connections via the LocWorld Pathable facility. It was someone who I had never met in person before, but have known through social networking for a litte while. What a great surprise to have her reach out to me to grab a cup of coffee.

Today we got to meet. It is always so much fun to be face-to-face with people who I’ve only known electronically. We discussed some business issues and perhaps we will have an opportunity to work together in the future.

Bravo to the organizers of LocWorld for being forward-thinking and implementing the Pathable functionality. It is certainly the wave of the future in terms of events and community. And, it paved the way for today’s conversation along with many others that I’ll have over the next few days.

I will be tweeting from LocWorld as @contentrulesinc. To follow tweets from the event, search on #LWSV.
