I always feel quite vindicated (and even elated) when The New York Times echoes something I have said. In yesterday’s issue, The Times published an editorial called, “Keep It Short.” The article is by Danny Heitman and is part of a series called, “Draft.” Here is how The Times describes Draft:
Draft features essays by grammarians, historians, linguists, journalists, novelists and others on the art of writing — from the comma to the tweet to the novel — and why a well-crafted sentence matters more than ever in the digital age.
Sounds like my kind of series, no?

The point of brevity isn’t to chop a certain kind of word, but to make sure that each word is essential.
